Excessive Hair

I wanted to have a little explore of how excessive hair had been used in fashion. We were shown this fashion video featuring lots of wigs which made me start to think how something such as excessive hair that is seen as ugly can really look quite beautiful.

The next thing I came across was the 'Jack' by Breach music video..

Then I found these photos of  hair stylist Teiji's work called 'Hairy Monsters' for PQ eyewear
(Found on Hungertv.com)..

Second Practical

For the second practical I played around with creating shapes and  textures I could apply to the skin for interesting effect. I made these all with various moulds and mainly with gelatine.

Books

I went for a hunt in the library and these are the first few books I found that I thought would be interesting to look at for this project, they are -

  • The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf
  • The Artificial Face by Fenja Gunn
  • Pricing Beauty by Ashley Mears
  • Body Extensions by Arnoldsche
As much as I'd like to convince myself finding 4 books in the library is hard work I know I now have to actually look at them, so i'll write another separate post on my finding from them!

Experimenting with materials

For our first lesson I experimented with texture and some colour added too.
gelatine, rice and derma color

gelatine, liquid latex, rice, beads, glitter, kryolan colour spray and supracolor

gelatine mixed with aquacolor

fullers earth, supracolor and glitter

It was interesting to see how the different materials worked and also how they dried, especially with the last one (fullers earth) because the more it dried and cracked the more colour you could see and the patterns it created were different too.

Intro/My initial thoughts

So one of the first projects for this year is called 'Brave New World' and we have been asked to create two looks/images in response to that. This project is all about looking into beauty ideals/treatments etc now and imagining how they might develop and further change in the future.
I think this could be quite interesting actually as beauty and body ideals are always around yet always changing and evolving. Also ideals can be so different for so many people so there is so many things to look at and possible inspirations to find, whether they be more beauty orientated or just plain weird! I am also excited to learn new techniques and try new products in this Sfx module.
